Trust building

Drunken Bottle

  • Category: trust building
  • Group size: 4–25
  • Time: 15 min
  • Supplies: Enough room to form a circle

Instructions

  1. The group is divided into smaller groups of 5-6 participants. Each of the groups stands in a circle. They have to be touching shoulder to shoulder.
  2. One participant of each group stands in the middle of the circle with their eyes closed. That participant will drop their weight onto one participant, who will gently push him towards other participant.
  3. The participant in the middle must keep their body straight, and their feet still in the floor, always in the same spot.
  4. If a participant feels uncomfortable or insecure with their eyes closed, they can open them.

Hot or Cold

  • Category: trust building
  • Group size: 4–25
  • Time: 15 min
  • Supplies: A big room that would fit all of the participants moving around it

Instructions

  1. Divide the group into couples. Each member of the couple will be either A or B.
  2. A selects a spot on the space where he/she wants B to stand. B will move around the space and A will let him know if he/she is in the right path by saying hot or cold. Once B has found the spot chosen by A they will change roles.
  3. It can be made more difficult by not allowing them to speak and only giving directions showing how they feel about the direction their couple is moving (i.e. happy if they are moving in the right direction and sad if not).

Snakes

  • Category: trust building
  • Group size: 8–30
  • Time: 10-15 min
  • Supplies: Blindfolds, bean bags or such throwables, buckets, rope/tape for barrier. Open space and enough room to get groups moving around

Note: It is very important to ensure we instill a sense of trust within the group before attempting this activity. Please do not try Snakes before building trust on a smaller/safer level. Sequence several build-up trust activities prior to Snakes.

Instructions

  1.  Create a large circle barrier with the tape or a rope. Place a bucket in the middle of the circle. Toss the throwables randomly inside the barrier.
  2. The  facilitator asks the participants to get into teams of 5-7 people and then asks the teams to go standing in line the very back of the rope. The participants put on a blindfold, except the last person in the line, who is the only sighted team member.
  3. This is a no-talking activity, but the  facilitator can allow the group to take 1-2 minutes to pre-plan. The person in the back of the line will guide the participants around the circle barrier by simply tapping the shoulders of the person in front of them, who will tap the shoulders of the person in front of them, and then be guided to pick up the throwables and to the bucket where they will drop the throwables.
  4. When a participant drops the throwables  into the bucket, they will then remove their blindfold and become the sighted team member. The person who was in the back of the line then puts on a blindfold.
  5. Continue this process until all team members have placed a throwable into the bucket. If there is more than one team, the first team to finish is the winner and then should encourage the other teams until they are finished. If the teams are uneven, the team with the least amount of members will continue to rotate until they have dropped as many throwables into the bucket as the largest team would have to drop into the bucket.
